2023-03-21 2023 International Colour Day - Decoding Color Emotion

International Colour Day (ICD) is a holiday established and promoted by the International Colour Association (AIC) in 2009, held on the spring equinox every year on March 21st to celebrate the importance of color and to promote color education and application. The purpose of this holiday is to raise public awareness of the importance of color, enhance human color knowledge, and encourage the exploration of color in various fields. On this day, various organizations and institutions hold celebrations and seminars to discuss the application and impact of color in different domains.

Following last year's meeting with Colour Literacy Project , the "2023 International Colour Day - Decoding Color Emotion" was held as an event on March 21st, 2023 at 15:00 Beijing time, organized by the Colour and Imaging Institue of Tsinghua University. The event was hosted by Executive Deputy Director Song Wenwen and Professor Song Limin of the Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts, with project team members including project coordinators Zhu Shiyang and Qiu Lixin, and Ph.D. students Cheng Ming, Lin Jiawei, and Yang Ziyuan in attendance. This event was planned as part of the 2021 Liberal Arts Construction Project of Tsinghua University "Research on Application of Color Art and Science Based on Design Subject" (Project Number: 2021TSG08202).

Professor Song Limin and Teacher Zhu Shiyang introduced the significance of the event:
Color is a visual art that can make people feel the vitality of emotions and the soul. Color can express emotions and also stimulate feelings.
The theme of this Color Day event is "Decoding Color Emotion", which aims to use color to express design or emotional keywords, in order to raise public awareness of color, and explore the color cognition and expression behind those keywords.

At the event, students and teachers from Tsinghua University introduced their backgrounds and shared their insights on the topic of "color and emotions."

There is a close relationship between color and emotions. Different colors can evoke different emotional and mood responses in people. Generally, bright and vibrant colors often give people a feeling of vitality and pleasure, such as bright red, bright yellow, and bright orange. Deep and dull colors are more likely to evoke feelings of sadness and heaviness, such as deep gray, dark blue, and deep purple. High saturation colors usually bring strong emotions and a feeling of vitality, while low saturation colors tend to create a sense of calm and tranquility.

The emotional and mood responses to colors are also influenced by factors such as experiences, cultural background, and personal preferences. Therefore, the responses to colors vary from person to person.

Participants drew keywords (such as modern, fashion, environmental protection, anxiety, elegance, etc.) from a "blind box" and used color cards or materials to express their understanding and feelings towards the emotions conveyed by the keywords. This activity helped promote the communication and understanding of color emotions from different perspectives, as everyone's emotional experience is unique, and the way they express emotions through color may also differ.

Colors are not only the way for recognizing and transforming nature, but also keys to approaching the soul. They can evoke emotions that resonate with us, lead us to explore our inner selves, and capture each person's unique spiritual style. Colors possess vitality, strength, and beauty, serving as a bridge to the soul that connects everyone's spirit with the material world and the natural world with humanity.

Finally, the participants took turns sharing their thoughts and ideas on their color design works and how they used colors to express the themes and connotations of their works, based on their personal experiences. This allowed others to understand different people's interpretations and emotions towards the same sentiment.

This event not only helps deepen participants' understanding and expression of color emotions, but also promotes communication and mutual understanding of color emotions. Through participating in this event, everyone can understand the uniqueness of color emotion expression from different perspectives, enhancing further understanding and recognition of color emotion expression.

Celebrating International Color Day is an opportunity to experience and appreciate the beauty of color. It encourages people to immerse themselves in the ocean of color, to discover its beauty, secrets, and potential. It is a commemoration that allows us to feel the power of color, to better understand its charm, and to more deeply experience its wonder. It is a catalyst that stimulates creativity and imagination, allowing you to feel the power of color and to more deeply appreciate its charm. We hope that everyone can find the beauty and power of color in this festival, and incorporate it into their lives, making life more colorful and rich.
