2011-11-16 Establishment of the Tsinghua Art and Design Colour & Imaging Institute (TASCII)

On 16th November 2011 the Tsinghua Art and Design Colour & Imaging Institute (TASCII) was established. TASCII is the first formal colour science and colour application platform in the country.

The opening ceremony was led by Professor Lu Xiaobo, Executive Director of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, and followed by an introduction given by Professor Zheng Shuyang, Dean of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. Professor Zheng Shuyang, introduced to the audience the background, aim and management of the formation of TASCII. Professor Li Dangqi, President of Tascii, Council Chairman of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, announced the appointment of Dr Steve Shaw, Professor Yanyang and Ms Song WenWen as Vice President and Executive Director respectively. Professor Li Dangqi expressed that most of the artists and designers perceive and apply colour in a subjective way. However, it is important to note that colours of a product, for example, have to be accurately and efficiently represented so as to preserve the original intention. Moreover, all the production and reproduction processes rely on technology and colour is one of the key factors required to enable a successful workflow. Given that colour is a multi-disciplinary subject it is desirable to bridge art/design and science/technology to enhance design innovations in industry. Tsinghua fully supports the development of expertise in the area of colour.

Dr Steve Shaw, as the newly appointed Vice President of TASCII, introduced the research agenda and future direction of TASCII. He also discussed the importance of the work that TASCII will commit to and its impact on industry. Dr Shaw finished his talk by expressing his thanks to all the supporters of Tsinghua, industrial collaborators, academia partners and everyone who kindly concerned and contributed to the establishment of TASCII. He is very passionate about TASCII and looks forward to the future development of the institute.

The seminar session “Colour – creativity and application” in the afternoon included five talks given by Professor Stephen Westland (University of Leeds, UK), Professor Lindsay McDonald (London College of Communication, UK), Professor David (University of Manchester, UK), Mr Huang Zhiming (Colour Consultant of Chi Lin Technology Co Ltd., Tanwai) and Mr Zhang Xiaokai (Colour Expert of HP Digital Printing House, China). The talks comprised a wide range of discussions on colour in the design industry and all were very well received.
